چکیده

Original Article Lower limb veins are most prone for venous disorders. Complete knowledge of the variations of great saphenous vein is of immense importance in assessment of clinical conditions like varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis and venous ulcer. Duplication of long saphenous vein is one of the potential reasons behind recurrence of varicosity after successful surgery. The present study was undertaken to identify the incidence and pattern of duplication of long saphenous vein in South-Asian population. The present study was conducted on 56 lower limbs; the dissection was done as per Cunningham's manual of practical anatomy and the incidence of duplication of great saphenous vein was noted. Duplication of great saphenous vein was seen in 8.9% of the cases. Duplication of veins not only is a reason behind recurrence of varicose veins but also it makes the extraction easier for procedures like coronary artery bypass graft.

Duplication of the great saphenous vein: a definition problem and implications for therapy.

BACKGROUND In the literature there is a range from 1% to 20 % of duplication (up to 20%) of the great saphenous vein (GSV) reported, because there is a lack of an accurate definition of the GSV and objective parameters for an anatomical identification. OBJECTIVE To investigate the frequency of true duplications of the GSV. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic review of the literature, a retro...

Duplication of femoral vein and its significant clinical implications

Introduction The femoral vein accompanies the femoral artery, beginning at the opening in adductor magnus as the continuation of the popliteal vein, and ending at the level of inguinal ligament, by becoming the external iliac vein. In the lower part of the adductor canal it is posterolateral to the femoral artery; in the upper part of the canal, and in the lower part of the femoral triangle, it...

The Great Saphenous Vein-An Anatomical Study

The anatomical variations are more frequently encountered in the venous system particularly in the superficial veins when compared to the arterial system. The great saphenous vein is the longest vein of the body and represents preaxial vein of lower limb. The venous anatomy is of great importance to the surgeons and sonographers. The present study included 25 lower limbs during routine dissecti...

The value of pre-operative ultrasound mapping of the greater saphenous vein prior to 'closed' in situ bypass operations.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to test pre-operative ultrasound mapping for the detection of duplications and narrow vein segments of the greater saphenous vein (GSV) used as bypass for occlusive arterial disease surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS In 44 patients pre-operative ultrasound findings of duplications and lumen assessment of GSV were compared to the per-operative findings. RESULTS...

Long saphenous vein and its anatomical variations

Vascular ultrasonography has an important role in the diagnosis and management of venous disease. The venous system, however, is more complex and variable compared to the arterial system due to its frequent anatomical variations. This often becomes quite challenging for sonographers. This paper discusses the anatomy of the long saphenous vein and its anatomical variations accompanied by sonogra...
